Mix 010: Elizabeth Joan Kelly

New Orleans – based Elizabeth Joan Kelly mixes up an eclectic brew of avant-garde tunes, and talks plane crashes, performing for turtles, and her new album, Music for the DMV.

Name: Elizabeth Joan Kelly

Hometown: Slidell, Louisiana

Current city of residence: New Orleans, Louisiana

Home away from home: my favorite place I’ve visited in the last few years is Vancouver. Such a beautiful, multicultural city with amazing food!

Local record shop and a recent purchase there: The last physical release I bought was The Velvet Underground & Nico at The Mushroom. More recently I purchased Jumping Back Slash’s Slow Oceans EP from Bandcamp. But the most memorable record shop experience I had was in 2008 in Tallahassee; I bought Christmas Portrait by The Carpenters at Vinyl Fever and then a plane crashed right next to us as we drove home (don’t worry, the pilot survived).

Favorite place to perform: Recently, my living room! I have two turtles and they’ve been subjected to my practice sessions lately. I’ve been on a long hiatus from performing, but the last gig I did was an art show at the (now defunct, or, as we say in New Orleans, “ain’t dere no more”) Big Top Gallery. That was a really fun space with a great vibe.

Your closest collaborators: my husband, who goes by Alison’s Disapproval for his solo work. Together we are Orca, Attack! and we work on compositions with each other as well as issue each other “composer challenges,” where one of us comes up with some musical parameters that we both have to stick to.

Goals and plans for 2019: I’ve been working on my live setup with the hope of recording some live sets for radio in the beginning of 2019, and then actually performing around New Orleans later in the spring. I’m planning on another solo album, probably for release in the fall, and some smaller projects with my new friend Xqui on the brand new net label Wormhole World, which we both just released some new tracks through yesterday (check out the A Picture of Good Health sampler!).
