Botany – “Needam / Wish To” (Western Vinyl)

Spencer Stephenson has been recording music as Botany since 2011, exploring a realm of heady, cosmic hip-hop and jazz most often associated with Los Angeles and the Brainfeeder crew. It’s Austin, Texas that Stephenson calls home, though, a city with its own psychedelic music history, being the birthplace of bands like Stars of the Lid, Explosions in the Sky, Sun Araw, and The Octopus Project.

Stephenson’s set to release his latest album as Botany, Deepak Verbera, through Austin label Western Vinyl on October 14. Having already given us the gorgeous, enveloping lead single “Burning From the Edges Inward,” he’s now shared “Needam / Wish To” a rainforest of sound that ditches the hip-hop in favor of misty ambience, meditative foley sounds, and flurries of jazz drumming.
