Elena “Kid Moxie” Charbila has composed the score for Greek indie film Not to Be Unpleasant, but We Need to Have a Serious Talk, in which Charbila also acts. The Giorgos Georgopoulos-directed flick, released back on October 26, centers around a man spreading a lethal STD, and his attempt to find a cure.
With the film’s soundtrack slated for release on January 24, Kid Moxie has shared the lead single, a cover of Alphaville’s “Big in Japan.” You can stream the track below as well as a trailer for the film.
Kid Moxie’s music is very nostalgic for the 1980s, a tendency that extends beyond her own sound to her choice of covers. She’s well known for her cover of Julee Cruise’s “Mysteries of Love” which Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks composer Angelo Badalamenti seemingly came out of retirement to work with her on. She has also covered Bauhaus’s “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything” with Lost in Stars, remixed Erasure’s “Sacred,” and had her own “Shadow Heart” remixed by influential ‘80s DJ Rusty Egan.
But don’t let this “Big in Japan” cover overshadow the real gem here; Charbila’s first full film score, a huge achievement for an artist who splits their time between sound and screen.
