Bibio goes full ambient drone on new album ‘Phantom Brickworks’

Stephen Wilkinson’s albums as Bibio have typically switched gears often, juggling genres with gleeful abandon.  Certain threads tie it all together though, such as his distinct, mystical voice, his pastoral fingerpicking, and his unique sampling palette.  His latest album, Phantom Brickworks, is an ambient concept album dedicated to abandoned, derelict buildings, which he explored and photographed while composing.

Very little of the Bibio sound is present here, having been replaced by somber piano and cloudy drones.  The tracks are mostly quite long, and remain as stationary and uneventful as their subject matter, a narration of memory for the people that have long since gone away, and a still life of what remains.
