Spencer Stephenson’s latest album as Botany, Deepak Verbera, isn’t just a lush arrangement of meditative psychedelia, it’s an attempt to recreate the lost research of mysterious Argentinian thinker Horris E. Campos. Decades ago, Campos believed he had made contact with what he called “deepak verbera,” sentient shapes of light that communicated with him through harmonious, droning sounds. Campos did his best to recreate recordings of these messages, but his library at the Institute for Higher Yearning was destroyed by a fire.
I can’t think of a better person than Spencer Stephenson to try and reimagine what only Horris E. Campos knew. The two share a firm belief in the spiritual, ecstatic grace found in nature, and Deepak Verbera is a perfect dedication to that idea.
